A.J. van Driesten belongs to the group of Leiden Impressionists that also includes Willem van der Nat and Cornelis Vreedenburg. They took as example the work of the Hague School painters, who depicted nature’s moods in an interplay of colours and tones rather than exactly representing reality. Van Driesten chiefly painted watercolours of landscapes, drawing inspiration from the area around Leiden and the Noorden and Nieuwkoop lakes – where Weissenbruch had once painted – and, later, Renkum, Eefde and Gulpen.
