Bart van der Leck, along with Piet Mondrian, Vilmos Huszár and Theo van Doesburg, belonged to the artists who gathered around De Stijl journal that played a pivotal role in the development of abstract art in The Netherlands. Like Mondrian’s, his work illustrates his quest to find the essence of form in the world around us, which he called ‘doorbeelding’. Subject matter like still lifes, animals and flowers he reduced to geometric planes and fragments of outlines, which were placed separately from each other on a white background.
