Willy Sluiter had two distinct talents: he painted splendid, Impressionist landscapes as well as harbour and city views, and could draw rapidly, able to capture life going on about him in swift, often funny, sketches and watercolours. Sluiter made numerous drawings of his friends and family, with which he shows himself to be a chronicler of his times. His talent for drawing led to many commissions for book jackets, illustrations, posters and other forms of advertising. From the nineteen twenties on he was a well-known and highly successful artist.
