Jan Zoetelief Tromp chiefly painted beach scenes with children playing and depictions of fishermen and peasants going about their daily lives. In style and subject matter his work is akin to the Hague School, although his palette is lighter and more vivid. His beach scenes of children are sunny and radiate happiness and sheer joy. He mainly painted in Katwijk, where he spent summers with his family – his children often stood in as models. His pictures of fishermen and peasants emanate an entirely different mood: his use of subdued colours almost expressing the tough existence these communities faced.
