Barend Hendrik 'H.B.' Koekkoek
Amsterdam 1849-voor 1909 Londen
On a country road, oil on panel 20,6 x 27,1 cm., signed l.r.
Barend Hendrik was taught by his father Hermanus Snr and probably by his uncle Marinus Adrianus too. He lived in Amsterdam, where he opened an art gallery in 1879, spent time in Hilversum and Brussels and also painted in Gelderland. Following his brother Hermanus Jnr, he settled in London after 1882. Also, like his nephew Hendrik Pieter Koekkoek, he lived for a time in Guildford, in the English county of Surrey. In true tradition he painted landscapes and woodland scenes in a romantic style. Typical of his English period are his winter landscapes with towering trees in portrait format. Barend Hendrik signed his work ‘H.B. Koekkoek’.
