Dick Elffers was one of the innovative painters who exhibited in 1946 at the exhibition '12 Painters' in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, He then participated in Vrij Beelden, together with Creatie the first fully abstract post-war group. Among the members of Vrij Beelden, Elffers was one of the most figurative artists, working in a strongly stylized form under the influence of French painters, especially Henri Matisse. Elffers was a very versatile artist. Besides being a painter he was a book binding designer, sculptor, ceramicist, photographer and he also made a name as a graphic designer. Characteristic in this is his choice for solid, bright colors and hand-painted typography.
