Le Fauconnier was part of the early group of Cubists in Paris, to which Cézanne and Picasso also belonged. His work was initially shown in the Netherlands in 1910 at the first exhibition of the Moderne Kunstkring (Modern Art Circle) in Amsterdam. In the following years both his ideas and his work had a dominant influence on the young Bergen School painters, especially after his move to the Netherlands in 1914. Typical features of his work included a sensitive, broadly rendered painting style, massive forms and the use of earthy greens and browns. For these reasons, Le Fauconnier was regarded as the trait-d'union between the French Cubists and the Bergen School.
