The German painter Paul Hoeniger was born in Berlin. About 1891 he visited Paris, where he lived for some time and became acquainted with French impressionism. The French capital enjoyed a period of great cultural prosperity from 1890 to 1914. The boulevards were a lively coming and going of fashionable ladies and the vibrant nightlife played out in numerous theaters and cabarets. In Montmartre, the Moulin Rouge and the Moulin de la Galette opened their doors next to numerous cafes and dance halls. For the painter Hoeniger this provided a lot of material for painting. Back in Germany, in his hometown of Berlin, he painted lively street scenes and cafe interiors with elegantly dressed men and women.
