Frans Moormans probably lived most of his life in his birthplace Rotterdam. He left the Netherlands around his fiftieth birthday, presumably to settle in Paris. Moormans painted portraits and genre pieces, such as this French-looking cafe interior. His paintings had titles such as 'The corner of the hearth', 'The tea set', 'Sunday morning' and 'The comfort of art'. From 1856 to 1884 Moormans exhibited regularly, including at the Exhibitions of Living Masters in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. It is unclear where and when this artist died, but it is suspected that this was in the French capital in 1893.
