Provenance: Kunsthandel Rueb, Amsterdam.

The Limburger Joep Nicolas is best known as a glazier, a profession that his father and grandfather already practiced. Free painting always played a role in his life, but became especially important from the 1930s, when he moved to Groet in the province of North Holland. He says he composed his paintings like a musician. 'I work with color tones, with lines like melodies broken by counterpoints'. In 1939 he left for the United States where he received numerous commissions for stained-glass windows. He was recalled to the Netherlands to make 25 stained glass windows in the Oude Kerk in Delft, which are considered his magnum opus. Nicolas was an erudite man, a creator, thinker and bon vivant.
