The painter, watercolourist and draftsman Rudolf Hendrik Oldeman received his first painting lessons from Arend Jan van Driesten in Leiden. He may have been a student of theology in this city, because until 1964 Oldeman combined the profession of a preacher with that of a painter. In his Leiden years he was also an enthusiastic member of the artists' association 'De Kunst om de Kunst'. Rudolf Oldeman specialized in still lifes, landscapes and a single seascape. After his retirement he lived in Haarlem, where the Frans Hals Museum devoted an exhibition to his work in 1942.
