Charlotte van Pallandt is considered one of the most important Dutch sculptors of the 20th century. She showed her artistic skills at an early stage, but bound by her noble birth and marriage, she developed her artistic talent only after her divorce in 1923. Van Pallandt mainly made portraits and female nudes in a robust style. With the exception of a cubist period in the 1920s and an abstract period in the 1960s, she mainly worked in a realistic manner, modeling at times coarse, at other times refined. Omission of details gives her images a certain monumentality. Van Pallandt portrayed many well-known Dutch people, including Queen Wilhelmina, Queen Juliana, Kees Verwey and Adriaan Roland Holst.
