Since 1981 Michael Ryan has divided his time between the Netherlands and his native America. A chance meeting with a Dutchman in New York in 1980 led to a commission for three portraits, and several years later Ryan had his first exhibition in Amsterdam. Like many Dutch and foreign artists before him, Ryan is fascinated and inspired by Holland's clear light. Using oils and pastels, he paints suggestive impressions of landscapes and cityscapes, while his portraits attest to his exceptional talent for capturing people and their personalities.
