Andreas Schelfhout was a true romantic, as can be seen from this painting Evening Mood. A shepherd, a high rock, a lake with a small sailing ship on it, and beyond infinity, bathed in a golden light. It is an image that could exist in a dream. It cannot be said with certainty whether Schelfhout has seen such a landscape with his own eyes. It is known that around 1824-1827 as a young man he traveled through the Meuse valley between Liège and Dinant, where he made many nature studies. The artist of the 'flat land' must have made a deep impression on the rock formations at Dinant. He must have experienced the same admiration for the beauty of nature a few years later on a trip to Normandy. The Falaise d'Amont near Etretat on the Normandy coast appears several times in his sketchbooks. Schelfhout probably created a landscape using various sketches in which he wanted to express that feeling again.
