The German artist Gustav Zaak started his career as a decorative painter, but later switched to free painting. He was taught by Carl C.H. Steffeck (1818-1890) in Berlin, who was best known for his depictions of horses and dogs. However, Zaak chose his own subjects and after his studies specialized in painting portraits and genre scenes. He lived and worked in Berlin for much of his life.
