Adrianus Zuiderwijk

The Groenmarkt in The Hague by night
oil on canvas 60.6 x 90.4 cm, signed l.r. and dated 21 sept '48

This painting was previously for sale.

Zuiderwijk lived and worked from 1952 to 1963 in Hahlen, a village he painted several times. However he usually signed with 'A. Zuiderwijk', he signed representations of the village of Hahlen with 'Onkel Arie', because he was addressed that way by local residents. Zuiderwijk was born in 1895 in Lisse, a town above The Hague. Not much is known about his training and teachers. After his departure to Germany, Zuiderwijk probably still regularly visited his family in Zuid-Holland. He painted this impressionist work of The Hague Groenmarkt at night in 1948. Zuiderwijk may have been inspired by other impressionists, such as George Hendrik Breitner and Isaac Israels.
