Bruno van Straaten was one of the first painters to revitalize the genre of the Dutch winter scene in the early 19th century. He lived and worked in Utrecht for most of his life, where he was taught by the landscape painter Jan Kobell (II) and specialized in cityscapes and summer and winter landscapes.
