It was only at a later age that the French 'animalier' François Pompon received extensive and well-deserved recognition for his work, especially for his animal figures in Art Deco style. Pompon started out as a stonemason in his hometown of Saulieu. Later he studied art in Paris at the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs, meanwhile working on various assignments for the state and private individuals. In 1890 he joined Auguste Rodin as a performer; three years later he was put in charge of his entire studio. Pompon had his breakthrough in 1922 (he was 67 years old at the time) with full attention for his sculpture 'l'Ours blanc' (the white bear) at the Salon in Paris. It became the figurehead of the art deco movement..
