Henri Schoonbrood belonged to the group of Limburg painters who became known in and around Maastricht, also referred to as the 'Maastricht school'. Initially working as a house and decorative painter, Schoonbrood took the big step in 1930 to the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. There his main teacher was Richard Roland Holst, who led the class of monumental painting. In 1935 Schoonbrood returned to Maastricht. He carried out numerous commissions in churches and public buildings: stained glass windows, wall paintings and mosaics. He also painted free work, especially figures, landscapes and still lifes in a figurative style. At the end of the seventies he switched to an abstract-lyrical visual language.
