Karl Friedrich Adolf Boser, born in 1809 in Halbau, Germany, was a well-known genre painter in his day. He studied in Berlin, Dresden and Düsseldorf. Boser was mainly known for his genre performances and (children's) portraits. In the second half of the nineteenth century, portraits of children were very popular in Europe. The affection of the child brought with it a sense of geniality and harmonious family life. This topic mainly appealed to the emerging middle class of Europe. Not infrequently, children were depicted with young (pets) animals, such as kittens and puppies, to further enhance the feeling of endearment.
