Kees Verkade is one of the most famous sculptors in the Netherlands. His most beloved subject is man, whom he prefers to model in motion, in both small sculptures and monumental statues. Children, acrobats, athletes and dancers in extreme concentration have his preference. The tension and emotional charge give an extra dimension to his work. Until 1970 Verkade worked in his studio in Zandvoort on sculptures and on commissions for monumental work from the municipalities of Haarlem, Zandvoort, Groningen, Drachten and Amsterdam, among others. He then made his international breakthrough and exhibited in galleries in London, Paris and the United States. Since 1979, the artist has lived in Monaco, where he died in December 2020.
