The painter and collage artist Leen Spaans is fascinated by the grip that time has on matter, on the process of decay, and on the traces that humans leave behind in their lives. He mainly makes associative semi-abstract paintings and reliefs. His earlier work is reminiscent of frescoes in form, structures and colors. Initially, landscapes and the four elements are an important source of inspiration for him, as are Homer's epics Iliad and Odyssey and science fiction. Later he turns 'inside' and the processes in the human mind form the basis for his work. Leen Spaans was educated at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam.
