M.G.P. Malmesi was born in Forlì in Italy in 1878 and received his painting training in Ravenna, Bologna and Düsseldorf. He made a name for himself in Cologne as a painter of portraits and still lifes, before moving to Holland in 1915. There he settled in The Hague, where he was included in the circle around Pulchri. Although Malmesi assimilated well and was regarded as a Dutch painter, his portraits, figures and nudes bear witness to a southern temperament in their use of colour and elegance.
