Woman and child, Staphorst
oil on canvas 60.2 x 80.4 cm, painted ca. 1948

This painting was previously for sale.

Provenance: coll. Micky Hoogendijk, Amsterdam.

Roelof Frankot, who was born in Drenthe, initially worked as a photographer and started painting in 1931, initially in a realistic style. From 1941 to 1948 he was married to painter Stien Eelsingh. At that time he worked in a style closely related to hers: colorful and expressionistic. Many subjects fascinated him: flowers, animals, landscapes (including in Drenthe and France), Staphorster scenes and still lifes. After the war there was an increasingly strong abstraction in the work of Frankot, where his colorful palette remained characteristic. Like the CoBrA painters, Frankot was among the post-war artists who brought abstract art to life.
