The self-taught Duverger was born in Bordeaux in 1821. He learned to paint by observing nature and studying the work of great masters. He made a name for himself with his strongly narrative genre pieces. He also painted portraits. From 1846 the painter regularly exhibited his work at the Salon in Paris, in 1861, 1863 and 1865 he was even awarded a medal. Duverger belonged to the realist painters, a movement that emerged at the beginning of the 19th century. He mainly painted everyday scenes.
