The painter and craftsman Willem Hendrik van Norden was born in Amsterdam in 1883. He attended the Teekenschool voor Kunstambachten and also took lessons in the evening at the Rijksacademie under the tutelage of August Allebé. In the Dutch Gooi region, where Van Norden would make his home from 1913 until 1920, he painted mostly landscapes, still lifes and figures in an imaginative and impressionistic style. From the 1930s onwards his work became increasingly realistic in nature, occasionally leaning towards surrealism. Van Norden was also known as an active designer of decorative and functional ceramics. After a stint as the artistic director of the delftware factory De Distel in Amsterdam, he moved to the Goedewagen earthenware factory in Gouda after 1923. He designed ceramic models for the Eskaf earthenware factory in Steenwijk in the late 1920s.
