biography of Albert Lang

Albert Lang initially wanted to become an architect, followed training in Karlsruhe and Berlin, but 'converted' to painting after a trip through Italy in 1869-1870. He settled in Munich, where he studied at the academy and was influenced by the pre-impressionist landscape painting of Gustave Courbet through his friend Wilhelm Leibl. Lang lived in Italy from 1874 to 1888, before settling in Frankfurt with his Italian wife and their son. His oeuvre consists of Arcadian landscapes, portraits, allegorical and mythological figure pieces, still lifes and a single genre piece. His style was also diverse: depending on the subject, Classicist, Romantic or Impressionist.
