biography of Elias Pieter/Dominicus Antonius Bommel van/Peduzzi

This special painting was painted in 1857 by two artists who were also brothers-in-law: Elias Pieter van Bommel and Dominicus Antonius Peduzzi. It is a cityscape with a wide path with figures in the center. To the left a row of houses, in the middle a wooden building with a narrow bridge in front of which a ship passes underneath. Behind it a spire bell tower and a view to a bridge over wide water. This is a piece of lost Amsterdam. The tower is part of the Leidsepoort (demolished in 1862), the water on the right is the Singelgracht. To the left behind the tree you can see the south facade of the old Stadsschouwburg on Leidseplein. All in all, a special cityscape. But that is not everything. If you look closely, you will see that two figure groups are posing in the foreground, each with a painter. They may be portraits; Peduzzi was a renowned portrait painter. On the left is a group of two women and a man (with knighthood). A painter leans against the doorframe, recognizable by the palette and painter's stick. In the middle a man with a daughter and a dog; next to him a painter with pink fez. The question is: who are depicted here? And why in this place? The south facade of the Leidsepoort was almost always painted, with the imposing facade of the theater next to it. Why the back here? Did one of the subjects sometimes live here? Is it a prominent Amsterdammer, family of the painters, or are they friends? Perhaps the knighthood is a clue. And yet also: what was the building on the right for? We are still looking for the missing puzzle pieces. Who can help us Charles Rochussen came from a wealthy family and chose to paint at a relatively late age. He mainly painted scenes from Dutch history and soldier scenes, where his extensive knowledge of historical costumes and uniforms served him well. He also chose as subject the pastime of society circles such as harness racing, falconry and sailing competitions. He was also a skilled lithographer and illustrated many books.
