Born in Montevideo, Luis Mora moved to the United States with his parents at a young age. After a thorough art education, he made a trip through Europe in 1896. In the Museo del Prado in Madrid he was impressed by the Spanish painters, especially Diego Velázquez. He would come back many times. Mora developed into a famous painter of genre scenes set in Spain as well as in 1920s America. He was also an accomplished portraitist.
