Frits ter Braake was educated at the Academy in The Hague and then lived in Groesbeek, Grave, Amstelveen and Haren. He painted and watercoloured throughout his life. In the summer he liked to work outside. Wearing a cowboy hat, he would go out with the motorbike or the boat. Ter Braake felt very attracted to the water. He painted boats and water many times. In the winter, when outdoor work became more difficult, he made portraits of children and flower still lifes at home. In Drenthe he mainly painted village scenes.
