As a great admirer of the Hague School and Anton Mauve, Piet de Regt preferred to paint his landscapes and village views directly to nature. He initially found his subjects mainly in and around his home town of Rijswijk, then a rural village in the vicinity of The Hague. The painter also had a boat that was set up as a studio, with which he sailed to the Braassem, Kaag and Loosdrecht lakes.
