Theo van der Nahmer is among the best known Hague artists. Born in Eindhoven, he trained at the academy in The Hague and lived in the capital most of his life. Thirteen of his sculptures are erected in the city, including Eline Vere on Groot Hertoginnelaan, The Actrice in front of the Koninklijke Schouwburg (Royal Playhouse) and The Flaneur on Lange Voorhout. Van der Nahmer was a multitalented artist – especially as a sculptor who enjoyed working in bronze – who also painted and made pottery. The main theme of his work was the human figure, although he also created animal figures and abstract works. His sculptures are often playful and joyfully expressive, the smaller ones having almost something cartoonish about them.
