Jan H.B. Koekkoek, the third son of the marine painter Hermanus Koekkoek Sr., was the most versatile of the four sons of Hermanus Koekkoek. He was also taught by his father, whose influence is still clearly visible in the careful painting style and fine detailing of his early sea and river views. In later years, Jan H.B. increasingly sought connections with the Hague School, moved to the Gooi and painted beach and sea views and scenes from the life of fishermen in a loose painting style and bright color palette. He is therefore a good example of how painting changed at the end of the 19th century. Although the 'romanticism' had not yet disappeared from his paintings, it is clear that a new era was slowly dawning.
