Clémence Pruijs van der Hoeven, born in 1839, belonged to the small group of women who were taught by August Allebé at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. After that, the painter lived and worked in The Hague, where she was a member of Pulchri Studio. Queen Wilhelmina may have acquired this watercolour there. Clemence Pruijs van der Hoeven's oeuvre mainly consists of portraits and narrative genre scenes with titles such as 'To the ball' and 'To school for the first time'. This watercolour of a wealthy traveler looking out her window in an Italian city could be titled 'A room with a view'.
