After his training at the academy in Brussels, Alexandre Clarys specialized in painting scenes with dogs and/or horses. This Belgian artist made an international name for himself with his animal portraits in realistic style. The wealthy from horse racing and hunting circles had their favourite horse or hunting dog captured on canvas by Clarys. For example, he portrayed the horse Montjoie of the Belgian King Albert I. Clarys also designed posters, especially for horse events, but also for agricultural events. In addition, Clarys was an illustrator for sports newspapers.
