biography of André Planson

The painter, lithographer, illustrator and decorative painter André Planson showed great talent for drawing from an early age, but is also a gifted violinist. For a long time he hesitated between art and music. Finally, in 1915, he started taking lessons at the Académie Ranson in the Montparnasse district of Paris. Inspired by the bright, cheerful colors of the Fauves, he paints landscapes, figures, Provence, Brittany and the Breton coast near Honfleur with broad strokes. After the Second World War he is part of the group of French painters who continue to opt for figuration. The art critic Gisele d'Assailly gave them the name 'peintres de la Réalité Poétique'. Planson taught at the Paris Académie Julien, exhibited frequently and also received government commissions, including for the decoration of the passenger ship 'France'. In his birthplace of La Ferté-sous-Jouarre, a museum is dedicated to the work of André Planson.
