biography of August von Brandis

August von Brandis, born in 1862 in Haselhorst, Germany, near Spandau, was best known as an influential teacher at the Hochschule in Aachen. Until 1900 he mainly painted religious scenes, after which he focused on the representation of light and colour under the influence of the painters of Fontainebleau. Then his subjects also change and the interior comes to the fore. Von Brandis repeatedly painted the rococo interior of Haus Uphagen in Dantzig and the house and garden house in the rococo style of the merchant Hermann Poensgen in Kaldenkirchen.
