biography of Bernhard Gauer

The Düsseldorf painter Bernhard Gauer was born in Trier in 1882. At the age of 21 he started painting at the Munich Academy, where he became an apprentice to the figure and landscape painter Karl von Marr. Through this teacher he was influenced by the Barbizon school and painting 'en plein air'. He specialized in cityscapes with figures. Von Marr's artistic versatility was also continued by Gauer. In the 1930s he received several commissions for monumental vault and wall paintings (St. Martin's Church in Recklinghausen and the parish church in Mettlach) and he restored mosaics, including during the excavations of Tabgha in Israel. He also illustrated books and oriental collections of short stories.
