biography of Carel Lodewijk Dake

Carel Lodewijk Dake studied at the academies in Amsterdam and Antwerp. Although he then worked mainly in his hometown of Amsterdam, he lived and worked in Brussels between 1887 and 1889. In 1890 Dake became a professor at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam and left his mark on many well-known artists, including Lizzy Ansingh, Salomon Garf, Germ de Jong and Piet van Wijngaerdt. Dake was a member and president of Arti et Amicitiae. His oeuvre consists mainly of genre paintings, landscapes with cattle and he also made etchings after 17th-century masters. His son, Carel Lodewijk Dake Jr., followed in his footsteps as a painter of landscapes.
