Born in Boston in 1870, Charles Emile Heil was one of the foremost bird painters of his generation in the United States. He studied at the Cowles Art School in Boston, where he was taught by the impressionist Joseph DeCamp, and then studied in Paris. Heil exhibited between 1896 and 1938 at the Boston Art Club, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Jordan Marsh Company in Boston, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
