biography of 'Charles' Joseph Watelet

The Belgian painter Charles Watelet was born in 1867 and attended the academy in Brussels, where he was taught by the famous 'woman painter' Alfred Stevens, among others. Subsequently, he worked for ten years as a portrait painter of the Brussels 'upper class'. In the period after that, women remain his main motif: defiantly adorned with a fashionable hat, lost in thought or engrossed in small, daily activities. Nudes are also not lacking in his oeuvre, posing in a boudoir or outside, bathing in the stream. Watelet's work was appreciated by contemporaries for its elegance and informal design, combined with a loose, impressionistic brush stroke and subtle colours.
