Dieter Matthäus was born in Offenbach am Main, Germany, but worked a lot in Switzerland. He was educated at the academy in Zurich and worked in the studio of the sculptor Karl Geiser before returning to continue his studies at the academy in Munich. After a trip for etching lessons with Willem van Leusden in Utrecht, he started working as a teacher in Zurich where he taught perspective and portrait drawing. Matthäus exhibited his work in several galleries in Zurich, Munich and the City Museum Trier. He is still active as a painter and sometimes makes commissioned work. His oeuvre consists of 'dream paintings' of myths, landscapes and current political events.
