The Frisian Douwe Mattheus Hoogeveen was a pupil in Utrecht of Elisabeth Hovy and Mauritz van der Valk, both realistic painters. Nevertheless, in addition to realistic still lifes, Hoogeveen also painted many naturalistic-impressionist landscapes and portraits. His abstract work is also known. The painter lived in Haarlem for many years and was a member of Kunst Zij Ons Doel there. He was also a member of the Boun fan Fryske Kunstners in Leeuwarden. Because he was a doctor of classical literature, texts or objects from classical antiquity do appear in his still life.
