Already at the age of 19, the gifted F.H. Bach became a teacher at Minerva Academy in Groningen. He introduced 'plein-air' painting to his students and was the first to elevate the Groningen landscape to a painterly genre. The Ploeg Painters Jan Altink and Johan Dijkstra considered him their most important teacher. In addition, he was a well-known portrait painter in Groningen and made many monumental religious murals, including for the Heilige Hartkerk in Groningen city.
