Frans Breuhaus de Groot learned the painting profession from Andreas Schelfhout, and also received advice from the landscape painter A.J. Besters ((1747-1819). Until 1838 he lived and worked in Leiden, then in The Hague. He also made several trips to Germany. In 1845 he became a member of the Royal Academy in Amsterdam.
