After his education at the art academies in Brussels, Munich and Düsseldorf, Franz Stegmann specialized in painting architectural scenes. His oeuvre includes capriccios (fantasy compositions) and cityscapes and landscapes with striking buildings as the centerpiece. But church interiors had his particular interest. For example, he painted interior depictions of Aachen Cathedral, churches in Cologne and St. Lorenz Church in Nuremberg.
