Georg Burmester painted landscapes, marines and representations with figures, with a preference for motifs from the northern German states of Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommeren. He was educated at the academies in Düsseldorf and Karlsruhe. During this period he made a study trip to Italy in 1886. He returned there in 1907/08, then with a scholarship from the Villa Romana, a German art institute in Florence. Four years later, Burmester became a teacher at the Kassel Academy, where he would teach until 1930. Painter, wall painter, illustrator: Burmester was a versatile and gifted artist. He exhibited from 1904 in the Glaspalast in Munich, and in the period 1899-1909 also submitted work for exhibitions in Düsseldorf, Dresden, Bremen and Weimar.
