biography of 'Georges' Antoine van Zevenberghen

n addition to landscapes and still lifes, the Belgian painter Georges van Zevenberghen mainly painted representations of women in tranquil interiors, engrossed in their daily activities. He was educated at the Brussels Academy and in 1903 undertook a study trip to Paris. There he was not so much struck by the work of the avant-gardists as by the interiors of the 18th-century French painter Jean-Baptiste Chardin. After his return, he incorporates his attention to lighting and composition into his own genre pieces. The painter was a member of the Brussels artists' associations 'Labeur' and 'Pour l'Art' and was appointed professor at the Brussels Academy in 1933, a post he held until 1948.
