In Gerrit Polder's work, the atmosphere and nuances in light and dark are given a lot of attention. In that sense he is a late Hague Scholer. Polder lived and worked almost all his life in The Hague, where he moved around 1920 to study painting at the academy. This painter's cityscapes often have The Hague as their subject, rendered in a fast, impressionistic style. In addition, Gerrit Polder's oeuvre includes still lifes, (polder) landscapes and portraits. Later also summery, southern French landscapes and harbours, painted en plein air.
