biography of Hans Verhoef

Hans Verhoef was born in Antwerp in 1932. As a child he became fascinated by butterflies. In his teens, he spent seven years in a monastery in India, studying butterflies and other insects. Returning to Europe, he continued his education at the Academy of Madrid and worked in Milan and Paris. He studied the work of the old masters and gained great appreciation for the versatile and complex techniques, such as the glazing technique, which they mastered. With this technique he knows how to bring his butterflies and insects to life. Verhoef has painted a large part of the insect collection for a well-known Rockefeller.
